5/18/2021 0 Comments SOCIAL ISSUEShark finning is the practice of catching sharks, removing their fins and discarding the rest of the shark’s body into the ocean. After the shark is returned to the sea they often drown because they are unable to swim without its fins. They could also be eaten by other organisms or bleed death. Millions of sharks are killed all around the world in order to make fin soup. This soup is a symbol of status in China. Most people do not eat shark meat. Shark meat has a very low commercial value. The rest of the shark is wasted. Sharks are finned ALIVE!!! Sharks directly or indirectly affect all levels of the food web which means they play a crucial role in helping maintain a balanced ecosystem that keeps our oceans healthy. I personally believe that humans are the main reason that this is a social issue today. Sharks are finned all around the world. Some places have bans on shark finning and sales of shark fins. Unfortunately, only 11 states in the United States have these bans against the sale of shark fins. I repeatedly used red in my image to display the blood of sharks and them bleeding to death after they are finned. Especially the blood on the human cheeks. The chinese fine china bowl image symbolizes that sharks are killed for only one specific reason, and that is shark fin soup. Shark fins can cost up to $500 while shark fin soup costs $100. This soup is a luxury dish that is aimed to impress their guests at events such as weddings, banquets and critical business dinners commonly found in China. This is why the images look to appear as a Chinese wedding reception. The background is even the Chinese flag. The Chinese wedding couple are both holding forks with the fins to show that they eat the fins. Chinese people believe that shark fin soup has many health benefits such as improving low cholesterol and increasing energy. Studies have shown that eating shark increases the chance of getting dementia, Alzheimer’s, Lou Gehrig Disease, Parkinson’s Disease, and heavy metal poisoning.

12/10/2020 8 Comments SURREALISMSurrealism is a form of art that displays visuals of objects that are realistic but logically impossible. There are techniques in surrealism such as levitation, juxtaposition, scale change, dislocation, and transformation. For my piece below, I call it "Human Store." I used juxtaposition, transformation, and dislocation. The human fish opening the door is juxtaposition and transformation. The house on water is also displaying the technique of dislocation. The image below shows that walking fish are selling houses filled with humans. 11/20/2020 2 Comments COVID-19My photomontage is about health care workers working on the front lines of the hospitalizations of COVID-19. There are many doctors in my family so this topic is very special to me. In the beginning of the pandemic my own father, a psychiatrist had to go to work everyday. He would talk about how many cases they had in his hospital and how different his environment at work was like. My own mother had nightmares of my father getting the virus. In 2018, my father had a heart attack so we were very worried about what this virus could do. My cousin in Brooklyn actually had the virus in which she received it from one of her art students. Thankfully she did survive. Her father (also my cousin) recently visited WNY since he had tested negative. He talked about how scared he was of losing his only daughter. He had also explained that the health care workers saved her life. She is only 35 years old. I wanted to say a message in a different way than others. I call my photomontage the "Modern Billboard" because if it weren't for doctors during COVID-19 our world may have completely fallen apart. The quote is to symbolize that doctors are heroes. The doctor holding the baby world symbolizes how doctors take care of us. The doctor wiping their sweat shows how much work doctors do for us.
10/27/2020 2 Comments DECAYSo what is decay? Decay is the process of rotting. Three of the most common types of decay are alpha decay, beta decay, and gamma decay. One decay that many people don't know about is distance decay. Distance decay is a geographical term which describes the effect of distance on cultural or spatial interactions. Distance decay is graphically represented by a curving line that swoops concavely downward as distance along the x-axis increases. Distance decay effects states that have interaction between two places decreases as the distance between them increases. An example of distance decay is the greater distance from a residence to a grocery store the average amount of people shopping there declines.

Although we were required to stay home, my family made the most of being together. I went on many little trips while being in quarantine. We had a fancy dinner at a place called my kitchen. They had amazing food with dog waitresses. We watched movies in a cinema called my living room. It had amazing views of Lake Ontario. On weekends we went to a place called my lodge. We walked to another fancy restaurant called my aunts cabin. My aunt Carrie had open-heart surgery back in July. Thankfully me, my mother, and my two brothers were able to get to Louisville and help take care of my cousins. Now September, my aunt has fully recovered from her open-heart surgery and is teaching in person in Indiana. Mid July my family felt like something was missing. After losing Maizy we missed having two dogs and Middie needed a friend. My mother and I began researching goldendoodle puppies. After a few days I found a black goldendoodle in Millersburg, Ohio on a local breeders website. When my father found out about goldendoodles he was curious on what colors there are. He loved the color of black goldendoodles because of their resemblance to a bear cub. After I showed my parents they knew we had found the one. She was born on June 11th, a day after Maizy's birthday. On August first she was home. She was brought home by a car from Ohio who worked with the breeder. She weighed 6 pounds. So little yet so adorable. After three days we decided a name, Baelee Mai Varallo. My dad calls her Baelee bear because of her dark coat. It's been so fun seeing her personality and growth. Baelee is now three months old and weighs over 20 pounds, On August 21st I turned 15. My parents and I went to Niagara Falls to go school shopping. Ever since I got my ears pierced in 2nd grade I wanted to get my helix pierced (Top of the ear). After shopping for clothes and supplies we went into the mall. Since Claire's was really busy we went to Piercing Pagoda. This was the same place I went last time with my cousin. The piercing did not hurt at all, until after it was done. My mom decided to get hers done too! That is all what happened during Summer of 2020.
